I am going to be investigating upgrading the version of the forums to the latest version; we're quite a few behind. It doesn't look like an easy process, but it should be do-able.
There are two main drivers for this update. The first is the integration of blogs in the newer versions. This will probably be more accurate for a "what's happening now" by the 700cb members instead of a forum posting. The second is the ability to publish and subscribe to RSS feeds for private forums. This currently installed version already has the ability to do RSS on public forums, probably a great thing since they are low-traffic.
And of course, all the usual benefits of moving to a new version with all the bells and whistles will apply.
So the "big-picture" vision is to move most discussion (WIP, musings, etc) to blogs with feedback provided by blog entry comments, keep non-public communication in the private forum, and allow RSS subscriptions to both so no one has to check for new info every day.
